My Latin Recommendations

I know people have certain Latin programs that they love and have consistency going for them (which is awesome) but I wanted to take a moment to share our Latin journey and how much we have enjoyed it through the years!

First, here is a hyperlinked list of all the resources I have used through the years! Check them out if you're not familiar with some of them!

Our journey started out with my musician brain trying to come to terms with feeling ok with the classical pronunciation of Latin. I fought it tooth and nail at the beginning but realized that I needed to bend and be flexible because we will encounter the classical pronunciation in all academic circles. HOWEVER, if my kids experience Latin in music they can easily learn the ecclesiastical pronunciation when needed!

Here's an article on the difference

Latin has also been something I have wanted to do in community so I took charge with the Charlotte Mason groups I helped run. Our first few years were just boys and we LOVED going through Legonium! It's a great first step into learning Latin.

When it was time for my daughter to learn, we had a larger group and I felt it would be best to work through a book with all the families so we switched to Minimus Mouse. This is the program I would definitely recommend to Charlotte Mason families of students age 8-15 that are just starting out! It was a wonderful experience! I also loved all the extra resources available to download here:

After going through Minimus and some of the other Latin programs on my own I went back this year to the Storybook Latin in the small home group I teach. I LOVE the simple translation stories and the vocabulary pictoral pages. If you understand the grammar of Latin and can help students translate and understand some of the "rules" of verb conjugation and noun declension this is the best program in my opinion. If you DON'T know anything about Latin, do not start here because it could be very frustrating. Instead, go with Minimus!

I'm not expecting my children to translate Virgil but I do want them to know word roots and vocabulary. Another great resource that I have at my home and refer to sometimes is the book English from the Roots Up! It's a lot of reading for the parent upfront but it will help students with vocabulary for the rest of their lives!

If you have a group of teenagers I also think the Ecce Romani books would work well! They have the translation aspect of Storybook Latin and present grammar in a great step by step approach!

Enjoy your learning and let me know if you have any questions!
