Planning for Year 1 and Year 3

Planning out a homeschool year is probably one of my favorite things to do!  Staying up late looking at book reviews and blog posts, creating spreadsheets and timelines!!!  It's all so much fun for a type A person like me!!!

I thought I would share with you a copy of my spreadsheet in case my method sounds like something you could do with your family!  I will briefly explain it first and then put the link at the bottom of the post so you can download it to your Google Drive and customize your own!

First, I want to say that I have LOVED keeping a printed copy in my binder of our weekly reading checklist.  The schedule on Ambleside Online is great and we have really enjoyed it the past three years. (Year 0, Year 1, Year 2.)  As my daughter starts Year 1 this year there are substitutions and changes that I am making to our curriculum and if you are comparing my Year 1/Year 3 to Ambleside you will see that there are a lot of differences and tweaks.

Here are my top 3 resources in planning our Charlotte Mason curriculum:
A Delectable Education
Ambleside Online
Living Books Lady Library

Because our library has an awesome Lending Library option where I can request old books from the comfort of my home, I have been able to discover some awesome gems from the "Golden Age of Children's Literature!"  A few that I've borrowed have been so good that I have bought used to have for our own.  (Like the Munro Leaf "Grammar Can Be Fun!")

In another post I might go in detail about some of the books in each subject, but let me tell you about the schedule document.  First, you'll see tabs at the bottom.  I made it formatted so there are 12 weeks in each tab for Term 1, Term 2, and Term 3.  There are also tabs that I will use to help plan out the week's readings.  I usually do this with paper and pencil in my notebook after I have printed the schedule for our year.

On the left side of the spreadsheet lists the subjects and the book titles that I will use for each child.  The big thing I love about this spreadsheet is that I can see BOTH of my kid's assignments on the same page.  We will be combining for some subjects and then they each have their own individual books to work through in each subject.

I still have to fill in our Bible reading assignments and our music/art but again, usually I fill this in with pencil on the chart.  Our math and copywork subjects are workbooks (Miquon and A Reason for Handwriting) but everything else is done through reading and narrating living books.  We love it and I'm really looking forward to jumping into these great books this year!  Let me know if you have any questions about the document!  If you have multiple kids it really makes it easy to visualize their books and reading assignments per subject on one page!  And if your kids are in the same Form you can combine a lot of readings!

  1. Thanks for sharing! I loved your year 1 planning so much several years back, that I came back to check now that I’m folding a new student into the mix. What does your schedule look like with two kiddos? How do you balance your time between the two?
