We first visited the "Forest Giants" at Bernheim Forest in Kentucky in 2021. I had never been to Bernheim Forest but had seen the signs for the park over the years. The very Germanic name of this forest in Kentucky brought back memories of traveling through forest and mountain scenery through Germany, Switzerland, and northern Italy when we were in our early 20s! Although there aren't any impressive mountain ranges in view, the 16,137 acres of land give you plenty of awe inspiring moments in nature!
We made our first trip on our way home from Kentucky Kingdom and enjoyed seeing the amazing art by Thomas Dambo. "Forest Giants" is an installation art project that was set up in 2019 in celebration of Bernheim's 90th anniversary. Click here to read more!
Eva Mae loved Little Elina and all the trinkets left at her resting place!
We went back again a few months later to enjoy the giants and the amazing natural playground that they have at the park!
It's so refreshing to see natural play elements on a playground where imagination can go wild! Even around the giants there are interactive installations that encourage imaginative play!
We are really excited because there are some new giants being unveiled at Cheekwood next month! You can see all the current trolls on the Troll Map - the new Nashville trolls will hopefully be on the map in May!
What I really love is that these natural art installations have a theme that connects them all! Here's a poem from one of the giants in Colorado that connects to the giants in Kentucky:
It was a cold winter, but the snow felt warm.
He woke up with eyes closed, and heard himself yawn.
His name was Isak Heartstone, on a mountain top of them all.
A name they gave him as small, now he was 36 eels tall.
Still a young giant, only 700,051 years.
Already a father to two, full of eyes, full of tears.
full of love he was, but felt alone on the mountain.
So he walked down to the forest, in the forest he found them.
His 2 beautiful children, little Elina, Nis.
And their mama Loumari, a big hug and a kiss
They spent the winter together, while the weather got better.
Elina looked at the sky, from the sky fell a feather.
It was a sign of good luck, and a fertile forest
Where every being had a place from the smallest to tallest.
They made a circle of life, they would soon have a brother
Its good luck for a baby, when it sleeps in the mother.
Some of wood, some of stone, some of sun, some of seeds.
Some of quarts, some of leaves and what fell from the trees.
A dragon scull he found 200.000 years ago.
It was a symbol of strength, so the baby would grow.
But now the ice was melted, and Isak looked to the mountain.
He knew he had to go back, and put his big arms around them.
A hug and a kiss, Nis, Elina, Loumari
“I will be back again soon” he yelled walking the prairie.
