Hohenwald and Waynesboro, TN - a fun family friendly field trip!

I love blogging about a trip after we've come home and dirty clothes are put into the washing machine and I can scroll through photos taken that preserve happy memories! Our latest trip was to Camp Wonder Wander in Waynesboro, TN. This is the third overnight trip I've been able to plan for our crew - I just love Val and her vision for the property!

Camp Wonder Wander

This trip was planned for April but postponed due to COVID19. Our first trip to the camp was in March of 2019 for a mom and kid trip, November of 2019 was a mom get away, and then this month was another mom and kid trip! We talked about maybe having a family trip next time!

I first discovered the camp in October 2018 when Val sponsored a post on Facebook for a fall break creative farm day. She gave a tour of her farm, went on a hike with us, and then created a nature print with sun sensitive paper and plants that we found around the farm. We packed a picnic and enjoyed getting to know Val and her vision for the property! In just two years she has grown the camp with tent camping sites, more animals, and a pottery studio for artists! She's training to become a certified Tennessee Naturalist and also a Shinrin-Yoku guide which is a nature guide to allow walks and "forest bathing" to help with health and stress levels. Her 5 acres of farm land are home to a family of donkeys, chickens (free eggs for cooking!) cats and dogs! She has an additional 5 acres of woodland and meadows to hike and access the Buffalo river. We loved our nature hike and spending time at the water's edge playing with the river rocks!

When we walked upstairs in the farm house we fell in love with the hostel style arrangements of the beds! My kids have loved having their own cubby area for all their toys that they bring to our overnight stay. The large gathering table is great for meals together and board games!

The special edition in our latest trip was a pottery workshop! Val brought clay for us to mold and pick out glaze colors! She fired our projects in the kiln and then we picked up a few weeks later!

The firepit is also such a great gathering hangout! We love singing around the campfire!

The donkeys are the most friendly animals! They are so sweet and we loved meeting some of the new additions to the farm! Several of the mama donkeys have had babies in the past year!

In addition to Camp Wonder Wander, the Hohenwald area has other fun adventures to offer!

Lewis County Museum

The Lewis County Museum has some history exhibits and mounted animals from the collection of a local big game hunter from the 1960s.

Elephant Sanctuary

The Elephant Sanctuary has an education center within walking distance from the Lewis County Museum! There are no elephants to observe, but the small discovery center is still worth a visit!

Horseback Riding

Whenever we visit Hohenwald from now on we will be reserving a horseback riding experience with Calico Junction Ranch! They are amazing with kids and first time riders! We have been twice since this blog post and will be back many times again!

The first time we went on a weekend we were able to have a cowboy supper after our ride!

Thanks so much for visiting and let me know if you have any questions as your plan your trip out to Hohenwald, TN and Waynesboro, TN!
