Planning for Year 1 and Year 3

Image
Planning out a homeschool year is probably one of my favorite things to do!  Staying up late looking at book reviews and blog posts, creating spreadsheets and timelines!!!  It's all so much fun for a type A person like me!!! I thought I would share with you a copy of my spreadsheet in case my method sounds like something you could do with your family!  I will briefly explain it first and then put the link at the bottom of the post so you can download it to your Google Drive and customize your own! First, I want to say that I have LOVED keeping a printed copy in my binder of our weekly reading checklist.  The schedule on Ambleside Online is great and we have really enjoyed it the past three years. (Year 0, Year 1, Year 2.)  As my daughter starts Year 1 this year there are substitutions and changes that I am making to our curriculum and if you are comparing my Year 1/Year 3 to Ambleside you will see that there are a lot of differences and tweaks. Here are my top 3 resources

Year 0 and Year 2 recap

We did it!    I am so proud of my kids and their hard work this school year!  I am also very blessed to have had another beautiful homeschool experience this year.  I know I've written before about the beauty of Charlotte Mason and I feel that the beauty continues to grow at a deeper level as I study the volumes and follow the sage advice from some wise educators that can be found on the internet!  I will say that our monthly mom book study is at the top of my list for homeschool support this year.  We've finished Volume 6 along with all the readings from the Brandy Vencel Start Here guide.  This was a two year commitment and we celebrated as moms with a relaxed and delicious meal at my house! The table is set for our final Volume 6 book study! It is an open table! Message me if you want to head over tonight! #charlottemason A post shared by RaeAnna Goss (@sewingmamaraeanna) on May 24, 2018 at 10:16am PDT Now, to get on to the good stuff and recap each subjec

Term 1 Composer - Verdi

Image
Giuseppe Verdi will be our Term 1 composer (a modification from the AO rotation of Weber) due to the opportunity to attend a performance of the opera La Traviata!  I am very excited for my kids to experience their first opera this year and I look forward to preparing them through our composer study this term! Biography: Classics for Kids has a great show introducing the composer along with some music! I also found this wonderful old (and short) children's book on Archive.org!  Verdi: The Story of the Little Boy Who Loved the Hand Organ Week 1-2- Aida I will introduce opera to the kids through some fun picture books like Opera Cat  and Bravo! Brava! A Night at the Opera . We will listen to the Classics for Kids show on Verdi and spend time listening to the Triumphal March from Aida.  Our library also has a story book for the Aida opera storyline. Week 3-4 - Aida We will listen to the Classics for Kids show about Aida and hopefully watch the performance.  Since

Tennessee Animal Safari Park and Paris, TN

To celebrate the completion of school I wanted to take the kids to the Animal Safari Park near Jackson, TN!  I have heard great reviews from friends that have gone so we took the day and planned a mini-vacation to west Tennessee!  We also saw signs that would direct us to the state parks we visited on our mini trip to Pickwick Landing ! It would take an additional 90 minutes to travel from Pickwick to the Safari Park so we decided to travel north from Jackson for the rest of our trip! Here's our route! Nachez Trace State Park This was a great stop because it was about halfway on our trip.  If the weather is nice, it's a great place to stretch your legs and use the restrooms before making your way to the Safari Park!  The kids enjoyed looking at some of the artifacts in the glass cases at the visitor center and you can park near Cub Creek Lake and hike a short 1/2 trail (Fern Trail) before heading back on the interstate! Safari Park The main attraction!!!  We had an
